Mike Waibel, PJ's longest serving employee

July 23, 2024

Mike Waibel has built an impressive 33-year career at PJ Hoerr. Joining the company at the age of 22 as an intern, Mike’s journey through the ranks, from carpentry to project management, and now as an estimator, is a testament to his commitment and hard work. Mike remains a pillar of strength and reliability within the PJ Hoerr company, drawing on his unwavering faith to guide him.

Talking with Mike, it was clear to see how close he holds the fond memories of his childhood. Centered around faith and family, Mike grew up in the Forrest Hill subdivision on the west side of Peoria. Being one of 8 children, his parents were strong believers in teaching their children the importance of hard work. He attributes his strong work ethic to his father, who had a major influence on the reason why Mike is the Mike we know today. Not only did his parents achieve their goal of raising driven children, but they also gave him and his siblings a space to create a bond never to be broken. Mike recounts the memories of his brother’s playing basketball and working outside together, memories he’s thankful to have.

Growing up in a religious household, Mike was surrounded by his siblings that lived their faith by example. Having a front row seat as they grew in their walk with God, had a great impact on Mike. He gave his life to Christ when he was 17 years old and has never regretted that decision. Long time PJ Hoerr associate and friend, Kirk Anderson, says, “Mike is at the top of everyone’s list when it comes to being truthful and truly living by the fruit of the Spirit.”

Kirk and Mike worked side by side on several projects for 25 years before Mike transferred to our Bloomington office. Kirk has nothing but good things to say about his friend Mike, calling him not just a necessary part of the PJ Hoerr team, but essential. “His dedication, loyalty, and determination to do things the PJ Hoerr way is a great example to all of us.” Working on various lengthy and difficult projects together, they found that they impacted each other more than they could’ve imagined. Kirk said, “Every day we shared the ups and downs of this business and life, and I am so much a better person today because of the time I spent working with Mike.”

His career is unique to most others in the construction world. Having experienced each sector within PJ Hoerr makes him rare in the industry and we’re beyond lucky to have him. Not just for his sought-after experience, but for the person he is. When asked what he can’t live without, he answered with, “his wife Rose and his kids and grandkids, but a close 2nd is good food with friends and family.”  Something that was clear while speaking with Mike was his love for food. Serving as the company grill master, he enjoys making smash burgers and fried rice on his Blackstone.

Mike has found contentment in both his professional and personal life, something most people spend their whole lives searching for. He has stayed at PJ Hoerr for 33 years because he’s never felt the need to leave.

“I could’ve tried to search for something else, but I didn’t because I was treated fairly and appreciated those friendships and the company that PJ Hoerr is.”

Mike is approaching his 34th year work-anniversary in December. Being our longest employee, we’re grateful for the work he has done and the lives he’s changed. On behalf of PJ Hoerr, we appreciate Mike’s commitment and invaluable expertise that has helped shape what the company is now from what it was 33 years ago.

Thanks Mike.
