The Challenge

Better serve our community’s needs without interrupting service to our community.

Modern facilities, ease of patient access, and fulfilling a rural community’s needs were key components in the Graham Hospital Surgical Renovation and Addition Project. Almost 60% of US surgeries happen in a hospital based ambulatory surgery center. Graham Hospital needed to both shape their facility to better accommodate ambulatory surgeries while also maintaining the resources for more complicated procedures that would require a hospital stay under the same roof. This would require a complete renovation of their existing surgical suite and also create a need for additional floor space. Planning for this $10,000,000 renovation and addition started in the Winter of 2015.

The Process

The project presented several unique challenges which demanded creative solutions. The site contained many underground obstacles that could not be disturbed during foundation placement. A micropile foundation was utilized to minimize the disturbance of existing utilities, structures, and building foundations. The addition also took place directly adjacent to the hospital’s main entrance. Patient drop off and visitor access needed to be safely maintained throughout the project which required some unique site logistic plans. One of the project goals was safe, easy, and efficient access to the Surgery Center. To accomplish this, an elevator was added to the existing building that would fast track patients to the Surgery Center on the 2nd floor. The addition would also be used to provide covered access to the hospital during patient drop off. Finally, the existing Surgery Suite could not be relocated or closed during construction, so construction had to happen concurrent with an active surgical department. Inventive construction phasing was developed between the design/build team and surgical staff so that disturbances and workflow interruptions with hospital staff were minimized or eliminated.

The Result

Graham Hospital’s Surgical Center is a 4,000 square foot addition and 17,000 square foot renovation to its existing Surgical Suite. Natural lighting is used extensively in the project with a full curtain wall façade. Ease and simplicity for patient access is a key component of the design with covered patient drop off, and immediate access to the Suite from the main entrance to the hospital. The Surgical Center houses 5 operating rooms, PACU, 15 prep/recovery rooms, a full processing and sterilization department, nurse and physician offices and workstations, staff dressing rooms, and two visitor waiting areas with private consultation rooms. After 2.5 years of construction, full occupancy was granted in Spring of 2019.
