New Construction in Normal IL | Normal fire department

Project location: 606 S Main St, Normal, IL 61761

P.J. Hoerr partnered with the Normal Fire Department to plan and construct their new $8 million, 30,000-square-foot facility near Uptown Normal. Through a process of strategic planning, Normal Fire Department determined that the current facilities and the location of these facilities do not adequately meet the requirements for emergency response services for the Town of Normal. With this process, it became evident that a new centralized headquarters facility was needed to accommodate the growing administrative staff in a single location.

In addition to this, the department determined that one of their stations facilities was no longer in adequate condition or large enough to serve its surrounding area. The department also decided that this station needed to be closer in proximity to Illinois State University.

These issues resulted in a new Headquarters fire station to be located near ISU and uptown Normal. This station will also be the location of the training facility for the entire department.

This project achieved LEED Silver Certification

The Result

The 30,000-square-foot, two-story station, features four drive-through apparatus bays, a full training center that can hold 100 people, a full industrial kitchen, a state-of-the-art weight room, a rooftop area overlooking Main Street, and a small theater space. The headquarters also prides itself on being the town's most eco-friendly station despite its significantly larger size. The station's rooftop garden area is part of its qualification for LEED-2 "green" building certification.
